What Should You Actually Assess When Hiring a Sales Executive

What Should You Actually Assess When Hiring a Sales Executive

Hiring a sales executive is not just about finding a candidate fulfilling the qualities outlined in the job description. It shapes overall team performance and a company’s long-term goals. This brings the focus to an important question: Are recruiters assessing a candidate’s ability to deliver results or just focus on their ability to convince during interviews.

Below mentioned are the six key areas to evaluate a sales executive during an interview for making the right hire.

1. Look beyond the experience

Imagine two candidates who have achieved their monthly sales target. While one of them has closed details by offering products to customers at a discounted price, another won deals by understanding customer challenges. Although both of them have garnered similar revenue results, numbers can still provide recruiters with an unclear picture of a candidate’s abilities.

Therefore, hiring managers should investigate candidate’s approach to achieving their target. The complexity of deals, challenges they faced and strategies they used to close the deals can further help assess the level of expertise. Sales numbers may only reveal one part of the story, the effort and skills reveal a candidate’s potential.

2. Know your king: The customer

Imagine a customer saying “We like your product, but we are not ready on the final decision right now.” One sales executive tries closing the deal through repeated follow-ups, while another one explores what is holding the customer back and what is making him hesitant. Although both the salespersons want to secure the sales deal, only one focuses on identifying customer’s underlying concern.

The recruiter should therefore go beyond assessing a candidate’s product knowledge and presentation skills. In order to get a clearer picture, hiring managers should do role-play exercises by presenting a mock scenario and asking candidates to lead the discussion. Overall, a strong salesperson asks right questions at the right time to understand the customer’s priorities and recognize the pain-points that might be delaying the deal to close.

3. The power of resilience

Sales often don’t go as planned. Despite thorough preparation every client discussion may not convert to a sales deal, follow-up mails may go unanswered and last-minute surprises can still slip away. During such times, what matters is whether sales executive learns from these setbacks, draw meaningful lessons and apply insights to future client conversations.

Hiring managers can explore this quality in a candidate by asking them to describe a deal nearing closure but still lost. The intention is not to judge candidates on the basis of missed deals, and rather their ability to learn from experiences and handle rejection from customers. At the end of the day, resilience is not measured by the number of wins but how motivated an executive remains in times of uncertainty.

4. Adaptability is the winner

Consider a sales executive who has spent years in selling products to large companies before moving to a new organization selling offerings to small enterprises. While the previous company may have large budgets and thorough evaluation process, the new company focuses on quick adoption and has budget constraints. Adapting the sales strategy to the changing environment can play an important role in achieving success in the new role.

A sales person who relies more on past methods may struggle to understand customer’s pain points. On the other hand, a flexible professional identifies the issue correctly and tailors the conversation to customer’s concerns. Behavioral interviews and role-play exercises can help employers to judge candidates on adaptability. For instance, the interviewer may present the candidate with a mock customer concern and observe how he behaves under pressure. Ultimately, the ability to apply knowledge from past experiences in new environments is what makes a salesperson stand out.

5. The art of building strong customer relationships

Customer acquisition is significant sales milestone, but the real challenge lies in building long-lasting relationships with those customers. Hiring managers should evaluate sales executives on their ability to retain customers after sales and build trust over time. These answers can help employers understand whether the candidate believes in creating long-term relationships or just focuses on achieving short-term results.

However, strong client relationships are not built through daily follow-ups alone. What matters is whether sales professionals actually understand customer’s needs or not. Hiring such sales executives will not only improve customer retention but also increase customer lifetime value.

6. The willingness to learn and evolve

The sales landscape is continuously evolving. With changing customer preferences and market dynamics, it has now become essential for sales executives to have a learning mindset. Salespeople who welcome feedback and recognize areas of improvement stay ahead in this increasingly competitive market.

During recruitment, employers should assess candidate’s ability to identify their shortcomings, acknowledge mistakes and make informed decisions based on the constructive criticism. Lastly, an executive’s selling skills demonstrate what they have accomplished so far, while their curiosity to learn indicates how they can manage future challenges.

Finally, an ideal sales executive is not the one who uses a proven formula for everything but the one who knows how to turn the tables with a new strategy.
